my report on this race,my first half marathon,i entered through runners world website as it said flat,underlating and on the road but on further looking up it turned out to have offroad sections namely the viking way,sunday came and we set off on what seemed a decent morning,but when we got there it was windy and wetish so thought what the hell try and make the most of it and had a look round only to bump into richard mackie,anyway time for the race so a quick mile warm up and onto the start line ready to go,few words from the starter bla bla bla oh and the lead vehicle is stuck in the mud on the viking way,thought to myself this is gonna be fun,so off we set off on what seemed a steady pace to mile one,quick look at the watch 5.23 thought christ but carried on,mile two and 10.58 after a slight uphill and then off road we go to mile three and 18 minutes odd lost all track of timing now as it was like running through a ploughed field and hard work for another mile and back onto the road,anyway back into a rythem and just kept doing six minute miles which was the plan stuggled a little in the last mile losing 3 places,but all in all was well happy with my first half had it not been for the off road sections i am sure i would have been around 1.16ish and well done to rich,he also had a good run by the looks of it,i have got to recommend this race to anyone,fantastic organisation well marshalled(did not go the wrong way for once)free massage after race,t shirt and a great lucky bag of allsorts, - , 2010-03-03

Snake Lane 10 - Alex and myself turned up for this one along with Phil Buckley. The plan was to run at 7:30 pace, to practice for the East Hull 20 in a few weeks time. Goal time for EH - 2hrs 30 mins. Didn't quite go according to plan. Looking at heart rate of 145 average - this was spot on. Finished in 70:15. Given your unstable state of mind, may I suggest a visit to AA (Athletes Anonymous). I am confident these people will help you with your problem. A series of 1-1 sessions and meeting other addicts may be of great benefit with your troubles. It may be a long and difficult process to clear your mind of runs, hills, races and things but with the right help, you will do it. A period of cold turkey should be followed by shandy,leading up to pints of lager. Hooking up with groups of teenagers drinking cheap supermarket cider may also take your mind off things. Never mind running. May I suggest 21 pints of ale over a weekend or perhaps 21 1/2 pints on one night. Down a pint in 21 seconds or drink 3 pints of 7% ale. Start supping at noon and don't stop until 21.00. You must have caught a severe case of the running bug. Again not Sunday (Saturday) but as we have an entry in the Derwent Watershed, full 3 weeks to get 40 mile fit, Steve Burgess, Brent Lyndsey and me ran from Cut Throat bridge on the A57 at Moscar onto Derwent Edge following the route, I dropped off at Black Clough as I needed to get back to the pub, Steve and Brent carried on the the Snake summit, and beyond. I was out 3hours + and really enjoyed the conditions. Hard snow in all the groughs and hollows and the bogs frozen solid. Unfortunately my race plan was upset on the night. Following the smack on the arse in the dark lane I thought it was my lucky night therefore I stopped to do my hair and put on some aftershave only to hear Kingsnail shouting some abuse as he sped of into the distance. That was a race and a half that was. I would sy it was slippy in places, BUT........ it was slippy in places. Had a steady first slippy mile of 8:32 (PW in a race) Wasn't keen on the two TANKERS on the icy corner. Strangely better underfoot the higher you went. Good Sunday morning blast. I am ashamed to say that there were 4 of us Sat a.m. who were beaten back by the conditions 1/2 way up Cut-Gate. The weather was picture perfect but the accumulation that has drifted onto the path was a right pain in the a*se. No single step could be relied on with 1 foot staying firm on the surface with the next breaking through and trashing the shin. An executive decision to abort was taken on the basis that not much running was going on. Put 2hrs 45mins in the bank though. Superb race, 2 lapper on the Braid Hills golf course just outside the centre. Slow drag up to the trig point, quick look back for the magnificent views over Arthur's Seat and the City, then the mad dash back to the start to try it all again. Finished 203rd (48:37) in a strong field of mostly Uni runners, did manage to beat someone from Leeds Uni though not many others! Sore calfs this a.m but an average heart rate in the mid 17o's suggests that I ought to be visiting a Cardiologist rather than a masseur. Perhaps I just need to get fit. Wayne was one of the injured parties. Due to Woodhead team's prior engagement (GnB it) called Glossop in to help extract him. Spoke to Wayne last night and not fractured but swollen and sore. Had 2 injuries in the car park before the event started, one lady fell and potential fractured wrist and one of the minibus drivers wrenched his ankle getting out of his bus. Then Dave Crossland, responding to a call, was driving team LandRover through Upper Midhope and a 4 x 4 coming fast round a corner ran into him, few dents in Landy panels but complete mess to the fron of the 4 x 4. Just had a "complaint" from a friend who was driving down Wentworth Road whilst speed training was taking place. While watching the runners in reflective bibs / yellow clothing nearly ran into a couple of runners NOT wearing reflective clothing. PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE wear reflective gear whilst running on the roads. Can you imagine how much paperwork goes with an accident, let alone the pain.
